Repurposing Your Furniture

Repurposed furniture is one of my favorite things to incorporate into a project. Not only do you get to keep things you love, but you can also give it new life, or actually use something that has been in storage for years. Repurposing furniture can mean moving into a different location and using it in a different way, or changing the look of it such as a nice paint new paint job. When I lived up North, a designer friend of mine was renting an old home that had little storage in the kitchen. She found an old chest of drawers, painted it black to match the kitchen’s “black and white” scheme, changed the hardware, and placed it in the breakfast area to store linens and china. It looked absolutely great!

Here is a design example of a recent beach house Blue Coral just completed. My client wanted the house to feel like items had been collected over time. She pulled several items from a storage unit in Dallas and we reused everything we could, much of which had sentimental meaning for her. The photograph below shows her son’s childhood pine furniture bunk bed and chest. We took the bed apart, had finials made to fill the holes, painted the beds a rich navy blue and the chest in a warm coral color for the children’s room. We then finished off the chest with new decorative hardware. She remembers that being her now adult son’s furniture, while everyone else sees bright, fun colors for a beach house!
